The Schaalsee is a lake in northern Germany located southeast of Lübeck and west of Schwerin. The lake is running into the river Schaale and has an area of 24 sq/km and is 13,8 km long. Max depth is 72 m.
Towns located at the Schaalsee are: Zarrentin, Seedorf, Sterley, Salem, Kittlitz and Kneese.
In the past when Germany was divided, the inner German border was running through the Schaalsee.
The Schaalsee is in the center of a biosphere reserve (309 sq/km) where you can enjoy a landscape with swamps, lakes and nature pur. You can explore the natural environment on boat tours, sailing, fishing and by cycling.
