Fall of the Berlin Wall - Germany
The Fall of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall existed over 28 years separating West Berlin from East Berlin and surrounding East Germany dividing families and friends for many years cutting right through the heart of the German people.
People living in West-Berlin were not allowed to travel to East Germany from 1st June 1952 . After years of negotiations an agreement was reached in 1963, which made it possible for a few hundredthousand people to visit their relatives in East Germany.
A peaceful revolution in East Germany led finally to the fall of the Berlin wall on the 9th November 1989.
Erich Honecker, the East German Leader, resigned on October 18, 1989 and was replaced by Egon Krenz. Demonstrations broke out in which Protestors demanded to get permission to travel to the West. "We want out!" Permission was granted and thousands of people were crossing the border. This huge wave of demonstrators could not be stopped anymore. The guards were fearing for their lives.
